Open Studio/Independent Study Opportunities
If you’re the kind of person who enjoys a little quiet time and would like to pursue your interests on your own, we make renting the studio easy and affordable. Just $5 for four hours of studio time for independent work. We make a wide range of equipment available as well, from sewing machines to pottery wheels and more, and we may be able to help you order some art supplies using our Arts Center discount.

FIGURE DRAWING OPEN STUDIO - just drop in… no pre-registration required! FIRST & THIRD WEDNESDAYS, 6:00-7:30 PM 1/18, 2/1, 2/15, 3/7, 3/21 (NO MEETING JANUARY 3) ALICE THOMAS, FACILITATOR $10 PER SESSION Every 1st & 3rd Wednesday, we’re offering an open studio session with a live model. Drop in and hone your observational skills! No formal instruction, but Alice Thomas will facilitate each session. Models will be clothed and will do both short and long poses. We’ll provide tables, chairs and easels, you bring your own supplies—work in any medium you like, as long as it doesn’t cause discomfort for fellow participants. Come in at any time during the session and stay for as long as you like.
Alice Thomas is a painter and printmaker who received her art degree from Whitman College under the tutelage of Keiko Hara. Her artwork has been exhibited across the region.
MASTERING THE MOSAIC -FULL (ask us about getting in on the next class, dates TBA)TUESDAYS, 6:00-8:00 PM, JANUARY 31 - FEBRUARY 21 (4 SESSIONS) TAMMY BURNETT, INSTRUCTOR $45 MEMBERS / $50 NON-MEMBERS + $8 MATERIALS FEE Welcome to the addictive world of glass mosaic: all the beauty of stained glass, minus the fuss of grinding and soldering. In this introduction to this expressive medium, you'll learn how to combine scraps of colorful glass into gorgeous images of your own design. Instructor Tammy Burnett will share her technique for laying mosaic onto framed glass, adhering with a silicone adhesive and grout. If you have a fun frame that you'd like to work with, bring it in. Some frames will be available and all other materials will be provided. Students are also welcome to bring in their own colored glass and other glass objects. All students should finish a piece no larger than 8" x 10" over the course of the class. Students who wish to work in larger frames are welcome to do so but should expect to spend some extra time working independently.
Tammy Burnett is a retired elementary teacher with a lifelong love of all glass. She worked with leaded and copper foil stained glass for several years before discovering the "glass on glass" mosaic. She loves the ease and freedom it allows to express creativity through color and light.
STAINED GLASS THURSDAYS, 6:00–8:00 PM, JANUARY 19 – MARCH 1 (7 SESSIONS) CELIA HAMPTON, INSTRUCTOR $70 MEMBERS / $75 NON-MEMBERS + $20 MATERIALS FEE Learn to craft beautiful stained glass pieces! Over the course of this class, you’ll start with the basics of glass cutting and work through the whole stained glass process, finishing a simple, unique piece to brighten your home. No experience necessary! Tuition covers generous studio time, including free access during Arts Center hours on weekdays and Saturdays. Materials fee includes glass from our collection, 50/50 lead solder, copper foil (we’ll use the copper foil technique) and lead came, plus the use of studio soldering irons, glass grinders and other tools. (For students who prefer to buy additional glass, local resources are Light & Line on Craig St. in Walla Walla and Cline Glass Co. in Portland.) For those with some experience, Celia will work with you at your level.
Celia Hampton teaches in the Pendleton School District. She learned stained glass work from Chuck McCullough at the Arts Center and has been passing on her knowledge to new students ever since!
CERAMICS HANDBUILDING TECHNIQUESWEDNESDAYS, 6:00-8:00 PM, JANUARY 25 – MARCH 7 NO CLASS FEBRUARY 22 (6 SESSIONS) LORI SAMS, INSTRUCTOR $80 MEMBERS / $85 NON-MEMBERS + $15 MATERIALS We’ll explore how a small array of handbuilding techniques, including pinch pots, coils and slabs, can be used to construct a wide variety of clay forms, from functional to fantastic. Bring your own project idea to class, or choose from a variety of suggestions. Whether you are new to clay or c your skills, this class is for all levels and abilities. Eight class hours will be devoted to building and four to glazing your work. Tuition and materials fee includes clay, glaze and firing costs, plus free access to the pottery studio during Arts Center hours on weekdays and Saturdays.
Lori Sams recently moved to Pendleton and is excited to teach classes at the Arts Center. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Studio Art with a Ceramics emphasis and a lifelong love for and appreciation of the arts. DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY: LEVEL 2 - NEW DATES!!TUESDAYS, 6:00-8:00 PM, JANUARY 17 - FEBRUARY 14, NO CLASS FEBRUARY 7 (4 WEEKS) BILL PEAL, INSTRUCTOR $50 MEMBERS / $55 NON-MEMBERS If you use your camera often, but always on automatic, this class will take your work to the next level. Bill will work with you to decipher the manual settings—and the pre-programmed ones, too—so that you get even more out of your camera. Please bring your camera with batteries fully charged and your manual. If you have a tripod, please bring it with you.
PHOTOGRAPHY FOR DIGITAL SLR USERSTUESDAYS, 6:00-8:00 PM, FEBRUARY 21 - MARCH 13 (4 WEEKS) BILL PEAL, INSTRUCTOR $50 MEMBERS / $55 NON-MEMBERS Add to your digital SLR photography skills, whatever your level of experience-- whether you’ve been shooting a lot or have just made the transition to a DSLR. You’ll receive clear, direct instruction and have lots of opportunities to take and workshop photos as you learn about both basic and advanced techniques. Our focus will be on manipulating camera settings and flash use to get the perfect exposure.
GUITAR FOR BEGINNERS TUESDAYS, 6:30-7:30 PM, JANUARY 17 – MARCH 20 (10 WEEKS) JARED PENNINGTON, INSTRUCTOR $70 MEMBERS / $75 NON-MEMBERS Learn basic guitar skills and build a foundation for playing all kinds of music, from country to blues to rock & roll. You’ll start with scales and basic rhythms and work your way up to playing some simple solos. No guitar experience is necessary. Please bring your own acoustic or electric instrument. (Visit Pendleton Music Co. for affordable rentals.) Students should also come prepared to take notes; some handouts will be provided. If you’ve already taken a class with Jared, you’re welcome to repeat the Beginner level or move up to Intermediate!
Jared Pennington recently moved to Pendleton after a long career as a North Carolina musician. He performed all over the US while serving in the Marine Corps and plays everything from blues to punk rock.
INTERMEDIATE GUITAR TUESDAYS, 7:30-8:30 PM, JANUARY 17 – MARCH 20 (10 WEEKS) JARED PENNINGTON, INSTRUCTOR $70 MEMBERS / $75 NON-MEMBERS This relaxed group will combine instruction with spontaneous jamming. Depending on the desires of the participants, we might work on country, blues, rock or metal songs. People with intermediate guitar skills will learn new chords and practice soloing, while more advanced players trade songs and techniques. Bring your guitar— acoustic or electric— and a sense of adventure. |

GLASS BEADMAKING - FULL (check out our February opportunity, below) SATURDAY, JANUARY 28, 1:00-5:00 PM KEVIN BOYLAN, INSTRUCTOR $50 MEMBERS / $55 NON-MEMBERS + $25 MATERIALS FEE Get a taste of the thrill of working with hot glass in this special workshop with glass artist Kevin Boylan. Kevin will guide you in the safe use of blowtorches as you melt and wrap glass rods to create beautiful beads. All materials and tools will be provided, including glass in a wide range of colors. No experience is necessary; you’ll learn all about the tools, studio setup and safety. This workshop will include demonstrations and short lectures, but most class time will be devoted to hands-on torch time. You’ll leave with your own beads to take home.
Kevin Boylan is a glassblower and sculptor living in La Grande, Oregon. He graduated from Eastern Oregon University in 2003 with a B.S. in Art. After graduating from EOU, Kevin began studying glass under Tom Dimond. Now exploring new techniques in glass, Kevin is introducing blown glass elements into his mixed media sculpture. POETRY OF PLACE SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 10:00-2:00 PM BETTE LYNCH HUSTED, INSTRUCTOR $30 MEMBERS / $35 NON-MEMBERS Where do we live, and why? How does the land (its seasons and weathers, its plants and animals and contours, its history, the work of survival in that place) shape us? What does it mean to live in a place? In this workshop we will explore our own relationships to place. We’ll have a working lunch around the writing table, so bring your own sack lunch. Beginners welcome. Bette Lynch Husted has lived in eastern Oregon for nearly four decades: the poems in At This Distance (Wordcraft of Oregon 2010), her first full-length collection of poetry, grew out of this landscape. She has also published two collections of memoir essays, Above the Clearwater: Living on Stolen Land (OSU Press 2004) and Lessons from the Borderlands (Plain View Press 2012). A lifelong teacher, she believes you can write.
INTRO TO THE HANDMADE BOOK: ROUGH TOUGH TAKE-ALONG JOURNAL an ALMOST FREE Saturday class! SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 11:00 AM - NOON ROBERTA LAVADOUR, INSTRUCTOR $5 MEMBERS / $10 NON-MEMBERS ** If you've attended a Hip & Handmade class before, you get in FREE! ** If you've been waiting for a quick and easy bookbinding project, this is the class to take. Students will receive prepared materials that will be simple to assemble into a fantastic, rugged journal. The finished book will be perfect for throwing in a backpack this summer, giving as a gift or just keeping around the house to doodle in. We'll also be introduced to several techniques for embellishing the finished binding, so while the basic project can be completed in an hour, participants are invited to hang out for as long as they want to add more design elements. Absolutely no art experience is necessary.
