$60 members / $65 non-members

Mary Corp, instructor

We'll begin the class by reviewing fundamental skills like color mixing, washes, and wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry techniques. Even if you haven't worked in watercolor before, Mary will have you confidently making marks and exploring the properties of the medium by the end of the day. On Day Two, we'll move our canvases outdoors and do some plein air (French for "in the open air") painting. We'll learn to select a well-composed scene, narrow our focus and work with a limited palette  to achieve a beautiful image with a wide range of tones. Mary will address the challenges of our high desert climate, changing shadows and light, and how to relax and enjoy working spontaneously. Come dressed for our ever-changing Pendleton weather and bring a sack lunch for Saturday’s session. Materials list provided upon registration/request.

Mary Corp loves painting transparent watercolors and has enjoyed developing classes to share her techniques with other painters.

TUNNEL BOOKS

SUNDAY, JULY 11, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM

$70 MEMBERS / $75 NON-MEMBERS + $10 MATERIALS FEE

ROBERTA LAVADOUR, INSTRUCTOR

Tunnel books are Victorian "peep show" paper works which showcase layered 3-dimensional scenes. Pages are drawn, printed, painted and/or collaged, cut and then assembled into a collapsible format that fits into a tailored hard cover. The tunnel format is particularly suited for exploring themes of place, dreams and memory. Students are encouraged to bring ideas for two or more books along with images and other materials for inspiration and experimentation. Students may also choose to simply be open to the ideas that emerge as we work through the project. For additional inspiration, check out the work of Andrea Dezsö or just Google Image search "Tunnel Books" to see a wide range of samples. NO prior experience is necessary.

DRAWING THE FACE – Special all-ages class!

Tuesdays, 5:45 – 7:15 pm, July 6 – July 27 (4 weeks)

$20 members / $25 non-members

Katrina Susi, instructor

We’ll figure out how to draw the structures of the head and facial features. Working from photos, we’ll study eyes, noses and mouths from different angles and learn how to put them on paper. Once we’ve studied enough 2-D faces, we might even bring in some live models. Please bring drawing pencils and a drawing pad, whatever size is comfortable to you. Katrina recommends at least 8” x 10”. Great local resources for art supplies are Heart of the Home and Blue Horizons in Pendleton and Pontarolo’s in Walla Walla.

Katrina Susi discovered a love for photorealistic drawing at the age of twelve. After a decades-long obsession with line and shading, she’s started experimenting with color. When she’s not drawing—or dancing—Katrina teaches in the nursing program at the BMCC.

You don’t have to be a great player: we’ll cover basic chord theory, basic repertoire, how to play with others and basic arranging.

Isaac Callender is a nationally-recognized fiddler, as well as an excellent mandolinist, guitarist, and bassist. Isaac toured extensively both nationally and internationally as the guitarist for the April Verch Band and recently retired to play and teach locally. Isaac and his wife, Emily, are the proud new owners of the Pendleton Music House.

Hey You! The one tapping your foot to the beat! It's clear that you'd love to jump in to the jam session, but maybe you don't have time or the instrument to take on guitar or fiddle lessons. Percussion is a great place to begin. The ever-engaging Dick Kaiser will teach you how to keep the beat and improvise great licks using a range of rhythm instruments, including spoons and other items you can find around the house and garage. No music experience necessary. A sense of humor helps.

Dick Kaiser is a retired teacher, musician and road-kill poet who is a regular fixture at the Great Pacific Open Jam sessions each Saturday afternoon.
