Drawing Workshop -- begins Feb. 16 Tuesdays, 5:45-7:00, February 16 - March 16 5 sessions Shari Dallas, instructor $40 members/$45 non-members + $5 materials fee
All of us are artists and all of us can draw; it’s just a matter of practice and having a few tricks up our sleeves. We’ll have an intensive session each week, focusing on the expressive power of line, while exercising and honing our skills as observers. We’ll use drawing as a means of capturing what we observe in the world around us. We’ll draw to see: our goal will be the process, not the product of drawing.
Please bring your own 18 by 24” newsprint pad and one or two soft-lead pencils (like a 4-B or 6-B). The Arts Center will supply marking pens, Prismacolor pencil, Conte crayon, charcoal and pastel sticks, vine charcoal and drawing ink to experiment with in class. (You’re welcome to bring your own, too. Good outlets for drawing tools and materials are Heart of the Home in Pendleton or the Whitman College Bookstore and Pontarolo’s on east Main Street in Walla Walla.)

This hands-on class will teach you everything you need to know about ceramics, starting with the basics. We’ll focus on how clay can be shaped, manipulated and decorated to create both decorative works of art and functional objects like spoon rests, olive oil holders and butter dishes. Our inspiration will be the texture and shape of natural materials; we’ll work with mid-range clay and glazes and pinching, slab and coiling methods to create a variety of forms. Every student will receive individual attention and be encouraged to work in his or her own direction.

NEW!! MASTER CLASS SERIES |

This February, Bonnie will share her soft pastel techniques with artists who are interested in integrating the medium into their own practice. The workshop will focus on landscape as students explore the benefits of working with pastels. Students will experiment with various papers, ranging from Canson to color-coated to sanded paper, and will produce several works. Please bring some reference photos to work from. Students should also bring their own set of pastels (an 18-piece set, at least), a sketchpad and a few other odds and ends. Contact the Arts Center (541-278-9201) for a materials list, including Bonnie’s recommendations for pastel sourcing.
