ART FOR TEENS
NEW! Make Your Own Merch - Roberta Lavadour Tuesdays, 3:30 - 5:00 January 26 - February 16 (4 sessions) How do you get the word out about your band? How do you make buttons, stickers and t-shirts that people will actually want to buy? In just four sessions, we’ll show you first how to design a band logo that’s both cool and professional-looking. (Or that looks distressed, scribbled, or graffiti-ed, depending on your vibe.) You’ll learn how to use our button-maker, miniature silk-screen apparatus, and other tools and techniques to shamelessly self-promote. Don’t have a band? Just learn to make stuff for fun!
Photo Collage - Vanessa Enos January 19 – February 23 (6 sessions) If you ask artist Vanessa Enos about what excites her most right now, she’ll say photo collage. We’ll start by taking photos (bring your own digital camera if you have one, though loaner cameras may also be available) and experiment with printing them in color, sepia, and black and white. Then we’ll transform them into collages by slicing, layering and rearranging them on paper. We’ll pile paints and inks on top and experiment with transferring magazine images onto the composition. There are no mistakes in this class!
That’s Not Junk! Found Object Sculpture - Vanessa Enos March 2 - March 16 (3 sessions) Have you heard of “upcycling”? It’s when you take objects and reuse them so they have a whole new meaning, purpose and value. In this short workshop, Vanessa will help you see old things in a new light. You’ll use junk and funky odds and ends to build a sculpture and then experiment with showing it off in photographs.
Stained Glass - Celia Hampton Wednesdays, 3:30 - 5:00 January 20 - February 24 (6 sessions) Stained glass has something for everyone. Are you into color? Make something bold from our huge supply of glass. Do you like design? Get absorbed in cutting pieces and fitting them together just-so. Do you love working with your hands? Learn to solder everything together with our torches and copper foil. In this class, you’ll learn to cut, grind and solder their glass to create several stained glass projects.
Fun with Improv - Michelle Bylenga January 20 - March 17 (9 sessions) Are you a fan of Saturday Night Live? Do you love the energy of live performances? Do you want to sharpen your skills and get more comfortable performing in front of others? Join this fun class to learn basic improv skills— or hone your understanding of the craft— while also working on trust, confidence, and more. Michelle will tailor the class to meet your needs and interests. Come prepared to have a blast! You may start this class at any time, if there is space available.
Through Your Eyes - Tabatha Ball Wednesdays, 3:30 - 5:00 January 20 - March 17 (9 sessions) Explore the world of digital photography and the digital darkroom. You’ll head out onto the streets to find unique angles and interesting subjects as you learn to use your camera more effectively. Then we’ll use Photoshop CS2 to enhance and manipulate your images-- your pics have never looked better. Students should bring their own digital camera (and user guide, if you have it). The Arts Center may be able to provide loaner cameras, if needed.
Drawing - Cameron Pahl Wednesdays, 3:30 - 5:00 January 20 - March 17 (9 sessions) This class is great for beginners, even people who say they can’t even draw stick figures. You’ll experiment with charcoal, pencil and pastel as you develop your skills. Give an object weight and dimension; draw a face that actually looks like a face; discover sensitive, varied line; build a foundation for abstract work. You’ll draw portraits and still-lifes and leave with confidence in your artistic ability.
CosPlay - Rita Hiatt January 21 – March 18 (9 sessions) CosPlay is short for "costume play." Cosplayers make intricately-detailed outfits just for the joy of wearing costumes—even when it’s not Halloween! In this class, we’ll learn to craft our own incredible costumes. Yours might be inspired by Manga, Japanese anime, or Harry Potter—or just by a character from your imagination. You can bring a costume that you want to transform, or you can start from scratch. Everyone will learn new sewing skills in this class because of the detailing and finish work. All skill-levels are welcome, but students will be most satisfied if they’re imaginative and excited about trying new things. You may start this class at any time, if there is space available.
Painting: Still-Life, Abstract and Landscape - Brooke Franklin Thursdays, 3:30 - 5:00 January 21 - March 18 (9 sessions) Develop your “artist’s eye” in this painting class. We’ll think about principles of color and composition and also practice different techniques. This kind of experimentation will make you a more effective artist, as you synthesize many techniques into your own unique style. You may start this class at any time, if there is space available.

Teen Bass Guitar - Larry Wilson 3:30 - 5:00 Okay, so you want to be in band. The only problem? You haven’t picked up an instrument since that tambourine for your 4th grade holiday concert. Here’s where we come in: learning to play the bass is your entry to the music scene. With just a few simple chords, you’ll be able to start that rock band. Larry will teach you everything you need to know-- terminology, method, theory, equipment maintenance and more. You may start this class at any time, if there is space available.
Teen Movie Music - Emily Muller Callender Thursdays, January 21 - March 11 (8 sessions) ** 4:30-5:30 ** Is your favorite part of New Moon the music? This class is designed for people who play a C melody instrument, most specifically violin, viola, and cello. Instruction will include musical fundamentals, such as rhythm and key signature reading, as well as an opportunity to play favorite familiar musical themes. Students should have at least two years of instruction on their instrument prior to this class.
Intermediate Fiddle - Isaac Callender For players with some fiddle experience, this class will be directed by the desires of its members. Our goal will be for you to explore the style that interests you—and to develop your playing to its full potential. You may start this class at any time, if there is room available.
Teen Folk Ensemble - Isaac Callender Come be a part of this relaxed group. We’ll bring together folks (pun intended) interested in making music and provide rehearsal time and guidance. Then, it will be up to you! The goal here is to create and maintain a dynamic group and give you a chance to show off your skills in a live music setting. All are welcome to join this performance ensemble. You may start this class at any time, if there is room available.
Beginning Folk Style Rhythm - Isaac Callender Have you ever wandered into a certain local coffee shop on the weekend and wished you were part of the cool folk and bluegrass gathering? Join this class to learn to play in a folk setting. Potential instruments could be guitar, mandolin, bass, banjo, fiddle or any other folk style instrument. We’ll discuss different styles of traditional music and learn how to successfully accompany them on an instrument.
