Art Rocks Teens (A.R.T.) - Free Workshops for Teens
All workshops meet from 10:30-noon unless otherwise noted
Nature Around Us - Patricia Knight Monday - Wednesday, June 23-25
Recreate your vision of the Umatilla River teaming with fish using a variety fish models and acrylic paints. Create banners, wall hangings and art prints on fabric and rice paper.
The adventurous artist in you will love playing with sand, pebbles, and rocks to simulate the riverbed and what might be floating on top: a leaf, a pine needle or even a twig with a river frog perched on it.
Beginning Guitar - Larry Wilson Tuesdays, June 24-July 22
Have you always wanted to learn how to play the guitar? This class will teach you everything you need to get started: strumming patterns, fundamental chord structures, beginning music theory, the basics of flat and finger picking, pentatonic scaling, blues, rock and roll, folk, and country songs, alternate tunings and slide technique.
The class is geared to the acoustic steel string guitar, but it’s o.k. if you have an electric or nylon guitar.
Beginning Bass - Larry Wilson Wednesdays, June 25-July 23
This class will prepare teens for rock-n-roll camp and help them gain the experience they need to organize well-rounded bands. Students will learn terminology, method, theory, equipment and more.
Intermediate Guitar - Larry Wilson Thursdays, June 26-July 24
Come enjoy a 5-week guitar workshop aimed at practical application of guitar theory for intermediate skill levels. This class is all about meeting you where you're at and helping you get to where you want to go with your guitar! Areas of study will include understanding equipment, playing chords, chord types, timing and rhythm, keys, and scales.
The Magic of Nature Thru the Lens - Patricia Knight Monday-Thursday, June 30-July 10
Put on your hiking shoes, grab the camera and we’ll discover the hidden magic of the Umatilla River - the home of the Great Blue Heron, steelhead trout, river otters and more.
Using the river as a showcase, you can capture the play of light, the wind rippling the water and the relationships to yourself. When your done, create a frame out of red or yellow willow and/or use river sticks to accent your photograph.
Creating a More Personal Theatre - John Remington Monday-Thursday, June 30-July 3, *meets 10:00-noon*
Inspired by the work of Spaulding Gray and others, this class will empower students to generate solo theatrical pieces built upon personal experience. The class will involve memoir writing, acting techniques, rehearsal and performance.
Piece-a-Cake! - Raylene Ellis Monday-Thursday, July 7-10 *Meets at PHS*
Come choose from over 300 characters and take home a real work of art. Learn the basics of baking and decorating a cake. This delicious work of art can be used as a centerpiece at a party. You can delight parents, siblings, grandparents and friends with their favorite characters.
Applications of Graphic Design - John Clark Monday-Wednesday, July 14-23
Learn the different uses and applications that graphic design has to offer. Experience the creation process from concept to finalized computer design ready for application. There will be a realistic project with a deadline and a final critique.
Bring a flash drive if you have one.
Multi-Level Ceramics - Julie Pridgen Monday-Thursday, July 14-24
Like to work with your hands? Don’t mind getting a little dirty? This is the class for you. Learn basic pottery skills such as hand-building, using the wheel, and the art of glazing. Students will complete a variety of projects and be able to work at their own speed.
Skateboard Design - Steve Winn Wednesday, August 13, noon-3:00
In this one-day class you’ll learn the basics of good design while designing your own skateboard deck,. Using stencils of your own design and other innovative techniques, you’ll leave class with a truly personalized and unique deck.
Space is limited in each class, so be sure to register early.
In addition to these after school classes, teenagers may enroll in any of the Arts Center regular evening and weekend classes available to teens at no cost.
Rock and/or Roll Camp 2008 Peter Walters and others
July 28-August 1, 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Students will learn the basics of being part of the music scene. They'll not only form groups and play instruments, but learn about recording, songwriting, promotion, concert production and rock journalism.
Teens will be able to work with local music talents as well as veterans of the indie rock scene. Check our website regularly for an updated list of instructors.
At the end of the week, those involved will help organize a blow-out concert to showcase some of the projects that came out of the week.
Lunch will be on your own. We have refrigerators and microwave ovens that can be used.
Youth Art Contest August 15-19
The Pendleton Center for the Arts will be hosting a youth art contest , Everyone’s River- Everyone’s Art this August. The entries must be inspired by some aspect of the Umatilla River and can be created in one of our Art Rocks Teens classes, at home or in school.
Categories include: Painting (oil, watercolor, acrylic) Drawing (pencil, charcoal, pastel, ink, etc) Photography (black and white, color) Ceramics Textile/Mixed media Poetry/Prose
Entry forms and information about the contest are available at the Center and on our website. In addition, teens from a filmmaking class created a DVD that explains the contest and contains interviews with a local river experts - 2 biologists, a botanist, an hydrologist, an historian, the tribal chairman, a soil scientist, and others.
1st ($75), 2nd ($50) and 3rd ($25) place prizes will be awarded in each category. There will also be People’s Choice Award of $200. |
