ART FOR TEENS

MURAL PAINTING - Amy Rogers

June 22 and June 23, 10:30 – Noon

June 29, June 30 and July 1, 10:00 – Noon

The Presbyterian Pre-School has asked us to put together a team to paint a mural at their playground, so we rounded up a great team leader and are looking for planners, painters and visionaries to join her. Amy Rogers will show you how to take a concept from scribble to a public art piece that will be around for years. Meet at the Presbyterian Church on June 22nd to check out the wall, and then walk back to the Arts Center to start planning. You’ll finish painting by the end of the last session.

Amy Rogers grew up on a wheat ranch near Pendleton before leaving to study studio art at Linfield College. After many years as a graphic designer in Portland, Amy has returned to the Pendleton area. She now works a freelance designer.

Then we’ll use Photoshop CS2 to enhance and manipulate your images so they look super high-quality. Bring your own digital camera, or call us about borrowing one. Be prepared to walk downtown, as we’ll be taking advantage of the wonderful summer weather to do lots of in-the-field work!

Tabatha Ball has been working as a professional photographer for five years.

KILLER SKATEBOARD DECK DESIGN – Mitch Montchalin

June 22 – July 13 (4 weeks)

Store-bought = boring. Customize your skateboard so that next time you ride, you’ll get extra credit for having a deck that stands out. We have a box full of blank decks and a studio full of vinyl, spray paint, stencils and carving tools, plus an instructor who will show you how to professionally execute your design ideas.

HIP & HANDMADE – Roberta Lavadour

Thursdays, 3:30 – 4:30

June 17 – AUGUST 5 (8 WEEKS)

Each week we'll explore an art project, based on some of the fun, funky things happening in today's DIY (Do It Yourself) Craft scene. Zines, mail art, bookbinding, textile arts, printmaking - nothing will be off limits, and if the students have a particular interest in something, we'll veer off towards that. Be ready for anything! You may start this class any time!

SONG-WRITING – JD Kindle

Wednesdays, 10:30 am – Noon

July 7 – July 28 (4 weeks)

Get in on Pendleton’s new music scene by learning to write the songs that local bands will want to play. We’ll start with lots of free-writing to get the ideas flowing. Then, we’ll learn about the song structure and rhyme schemes that give your lyrics shape. Bring in songs you like and we’ll figure out what makes them so good and talk about how they could be better. It’s great if you have some experience playing guitar or piano, because we’ll be setting our lyrics to music. If you don’t know how to play, JD and the class will collaborate with you to figure out the right chords. You’ll leave with a song that’s all your own.

JD Kindle is an accomplished musician and song-writer whose band, JD Kindle and the Eastern Oregon Playboys, performs regularly across the northwest and has been profiled by Oregon Public Broadcasting’s Oregon Art Beat. Visit www.opb.org to check it out.

In this class, you’ll learn everything you need to get started: strumming patterns, fundamental chord structures, beginning music theory, the basics of flat and finger picking, and pentatonic scaling in a variety of music styles (rock, country and more). The class is geared to the acoustic steel string guitar, but it’s okay if yours is electric or nylon. You may start this class any time, if there’s space.

Larry Wilson loves teaching guitar for the Art Rocks Teens program because he gets to figure out tabs for his students— everything from death metal to pop songs. When he’s not leading guitar lessons, Larry is the director of the BMCC Betty Feves Memorial Gallery.

INTERMEDIATE GUITAR – Larry Wilson

Wednesdays, 3:30 – 5:00

June 23 – July 28 (6 weeks)

Come enjoy a guitar workshop that’s aimed at practical application of guitar theory for intermediate skill levels.  This class is all about meeting you where you’re at and helping you get to where you want to go with your guitar!  Areas of study will include understanding equipment, playing chords, chord types, timing, rhythm, keys, and scales. You may start this class any time, if there’s space.

BASS GUITAR – Larry Wilson

Thursdays, 1:00 – 3:30

June 24 – July 29 (6 weeks)

Okay, so you want to be in band. The only problem? You haven’t picked up an instrument since that tambourine for your 4th grade holiday concert. Here’s where we come in: learning to play the bass is your entry to the music scene. With just a few simple chords, you’ll be able to start that rock band. Larry will teach you everything you need to know—terminology, method, theory, equipment maintenance and more. You may start this class any time, if there’s space.

INTERMEDIATE FIDDLE – Isaac Callender

Tuesdays, 3:30 – 4:30

June 22 – July 27 (6 weeks)

For players with some fiddle experience, this class will be directed by the desires of its members. We’ll cover intermediate and advanced fiddle tunes, improvisation, arranging and more. Our goal will be for you to explore the style that interests you—and to develop your playing to its full potential.

Isaac Callender is a nationally-recognized fiddler, as well as an excellent mandolinist, guitarist, and bassist. Isaac toured extensively both nationally and internationally as the guitarist for the April Verch Band and recently retired to play and teach locally. Isaac and his wife, Emily, are the proud new owners of the Pendleton Music House.

Tuesdays, 4:30 – 5:30

June 22 – July 27 (6 weeks)

Join this class to learn to play in a folk setting. Potential instruments could be guitar, mandolin, bass, banjo, fiddle or any other folk style instrument. We’ll cover everything from chord and bass lines to varying meters and stylistic differences.

FOLK ENSEMBLE – Isaac Callender

Tuesdays, 5:30 – 6:30

June 22 – July 27 (6 weeks)

Do you play guitar, mandolin, bass, banjo, fiddle or another folk-style instrument? Do you like signing folk songs? If you just want to make music, join this relaxed group. We provide rehearsal time and guidance and then give you free rein. Our eventual goal is to create and maintain a dynamic group and give you a chance to show off your skills in a live music setting—and even to do some professional-level recording! All are welcome!
